Museu municipal de ceràmica de Paterna
The Museo de Cerámica of Paterna, located in the Plaza del Pueblo, in a building dating from 1881, was formerly the Town Hall. As an institution, it was inaugurated in 1980 with the mission of protecting, conserving, studying and disseminating the Historical Heritage of the municipality.
All the pieces it houses have been retrieved from excavations carried out in the municipality of Paterna. Most of these materials belong to the medieval period, as Paterna was a great centre for the production of ceramics, although it also has materials from other historical periods.
Thanks to the archaeological excavations undertaken since the eighties of the last century, much of the history and daily life of Paterna inhabitants has been documented: the Renaissance quarter, the Muslim cemetery, two canvasses from the wall, the two pottery districts of Ollerías Mayores [main potteries], located in the Testar del Molí, the Ollerías Menores [small potteries] and other industrial facilities.
A few years ago, thanks to subsequent archaeological activity, a Roman villa of great patrimonial wealth was discovered. Today the Municipal Archaeological Service continues to work on the protection and enhancement of the local archaeological heritage.
EDUCATIONAL USES
As a museum institution, we also offer activities for both children and adults with the intention of promoting the cultural heritage of the municipality. Among other activities, we conduct workshops, excursions and cultural meetings so that people will get to know and value Paterna’s heritage. Finally, we intend to establish a live relation between archaeological work, museography and society.
